All organizations have needs and like to use new technology to make running their business easier. People working in organizations need to stay connected and maintaining security is essential. A case in point is the use of virtualization because it exploits the organization’s hardware completely and makes scaling simple. Productivity becomes easier because every employee is given ways to work from anywhere, at any time and on any device to keep the business running. There are however, two problems - new server technologies are very expensive and some servers in the organization need to be shut down to configure them to the new server. Even if organizations are able to buy the new server technologies, operational difficulties are enormous due to the purchase, and the requirement to configure, implement and manage a lot of hardware in their own facilities. This is particularly painful in the Payment Card Industry and the Data Security Standard where virtualization compliance follows the most stringent regulations that could be set. This is where virtualization compliance is most needed.

What are the advantages of virtualization compliance?

1. It ensures the continuity of business for when a virtual server fails its easier for another healthy server can take its place.

2. It saves cost for hardware and provisioning of new systems by allocating the existing IT resources. External auditors are also not required to prepare audit reports.

3. Server management becomes easier and there is a decrease in costs of labor prevalent in managing traditional servers.

4. Implementing proper virtualization. The ultimate goal is to meet requirements for the storage of reports and data as well as to provide guidance to those people who are managing the complex structure of virtualizations at data center, server, application, and workstation levels. Testing the virtualization compliance would be the first part of the agenda after implementation besides planning periodic backups to make sure that they are functioning at optimum level.

After implementing the compliance, it is absolutely necessary to view security for virtualization. Though there are similarities to bulletproofing the security of physical and virtual machines, there are some basic differences posing a serious danger to IT managers. Assessing the risk will give these managers an idea of what they can face. These include:

a. Does the guest of the host company contain sensitive information like bank and credit card details? Are these details in danger of becoming public without the security to virtualization? How is this information protected?

b. Does the host company use encryption methods to protect personal information?

c. Does the virtual machine have access to the internet? Does it have security to protect it from spammers?

d. Does the virtual machine possess access to other production computers?

Answers to these questions will ensure that security for virtualization is mandatory in all virtualization compliance organizations.
